Suzuki Niagara Studio Policies

Scheduling, Cancelled Lessons

Lessons cancelled by the student/parent will not be rescheduled and made up, except in the case of extreme illness or family emergency (to be considered by the private teacher).

In the event that a student will be absent from a lesson, advance notice is expected. Please contact the teacher as soon as you know of an upcoming absence, so that the time can be used effectively by the teacher. Lessons cancelled by the teacher will be rescheduled to a time that is mutually convenient. If a lesson is to be made-up and is not able to be rescheduled within the month, the teacher will then carry over the pre-paid lesson into the next month by either adding an extra lesson or deducting one lesson fee from that next month’s payment.

Weekly lesson times are set for the year. The teacher is not obligated to change lesson times for any reason. Private lessons may be scheduled during school hours. According to the Ontario School Act: “A child is excused from attendance if he or she is absent for the purpose of receiving instruction in music and the period of absence does not exceed one-half day in any week.”

Holiday Policy, PD Days, and Other Days

Lessons that fall on legal holidays (i.e. Thanksgiving, Good Friday, etc.) will be given if both parent and teacher wish OR rescheduled to a date that is mutually convenient. Lessons scheduled on Professional Development Days will take place as usual. In the event of school closures due to inclement weather, lessons will be cancelled for that day and rescheduled at a mutually convenient date.

Withdrawal

Should you wish to withdraw from the program, your teacher should be notified immediately. If you withdraw from the program before the end of a pre-paid month, the remaining lesson fees will not be returned. A $50.00 cancellation fee will be due at the last lesson. The registration fee is nonrefundable.

Parent Involvement

One parent/guardian is required to attend all lessons with the student. This “Suzuki Parent” is expected to either take notes during the lesson or film/record the lesson for reference at home. Attendance at all lessons provides the student with support and helps greatly in understanding the material learned for efficient home practice.

The Suzuki Parent is required to practice with the student at home on a daily basis. The role of being the “home teacher” is incredibly important in the student’s progress.

The Suzuki Parent should play the Suzuki reference recordings for the student every day, as well as expose the student to various types of music (especially classical music!).

The Suzuki Parent also has the role of helping to create an environment (at the lesson and at home) which is nurturing, loving, supportive, encouraging and understanding. This environment will provide the most positive and effective learning experience possible.

Parents are encouraged to communicate freely with the teacher any questions, concerns, or ideas throughout the year, either at lessons or via phone/email.

If a sibling or friend will be sitting in on the lesson, the parent should make sure that they behave in a manner that is of no distraction for the student.
